When you were still here, when a simple phone call could bring you to me,
And we'd sit in your car with the windows down and your radio playing loud,
You'd run your fingers through my hair and say, "I'd love it if your hair was long"
As you let the hacked ends slip elegantly through your fingers

Our summer drew to a close, and our sun-kissed days ended sweetly
With a day well-spent at an abandoned beach
And we stayed until the sun dropped below the waves
And you held me tight in your arms, as if you knew it was the last time we'd be together.

I suppose I should have known, but it was still a surprise.
You vanished so suddenly, just packed your bags and got on the plane.
"I'll be home in a few months, promise."
So I hid my tears, and attached all my hope to tomorrrow because today was empty.

I suppose it was easy to hack off my hair when you were here to lament the loss of each strand.
But it just grows harder each time to snip away the locks.
I remember your hands tangling in my curls, smoothing them away from my face.
And I remember how safe you'd make me feel.

So now I don't trim my locks, and they tumble and curl like ivy down my back,
And I wish that time would speed up, and return you to me.
I wish that you'd come up behind me, wrap your arms tight around me, a fortress against pain,
And you'd rest your chin on my head, and I'd feel safe again.
